OPS ballast water treatment system: rigorous testing starts
Following several years of development and numerous successful scale tests in technical plants, MAHLE NFV’s Ocean Protection System (OPS) is currently undergoing an on-land test phase in the Netherlands. The aim of this initial series of trials is to test the system under the toughest conditions: the water being used in the tests has a high content of sediments due to tidal conditions. This was a key criterion for MAHLE NFV to ensure the new system performed well under gruelling conditions before starting the official certification test series.
The MAHLE NFV ballast water treatment system OPS is based on a combination of two consecutive processes. First, the ballast water is mechanically pre-treated in a process that uses filtration and separation to remove particles and organisms up to 50µm in size. In the second phase of physical treatment all organisms smaller than 50µm are deactivated with UV radiation. After processing, the ballast water fully complies with the D2 standard. This method has exceptional advantages: it is tried and tested, provides top quality results, it operates efficiently to a high standard of safety and requires no chemical additives. Also, OPS has a modular design, allowing it to be adapted to all specific on-board conditions. This level of flexibility ensures that the system is ideal for both retrofits and newbuilds.
